Hovhaness(1911-2000)

Description:

Alan Hovhaness was born in the United States, but his roots are extensive, with his father of Armenian descent and his mother of Scottish descent. He also traveled to Finland as a young man and became friends with Sibelius, was baptized in Indian music by the dancer Uday Shankar, and studied Japanese instruments during a year-long stay in Japan. This album contains Hovhaness's wind band works, including world premiere recordings, where we can hear a variety of his styles. The works with an exotic atmosphere include "Lamentation of Ani," which describes the fall of the capital of medieval Armenia and shares the same theme as his Symphony No. 23 "Ani," and "Overture to the Burning House," in which a Japanese-style melody can be heard. Performances will be given by three conductors, including Keith Bryon, who is well known for his Sousa performances. Naxos Japan
