This 5-CD set commemorates the 95th anniversary of the birth of Leonid Kogan, one of the greatest violinists of the Soviet Union era. Starting with a duet with Elizaveta, the sister of pianist Emil Gilleris and an outstanding violinist, followed by a recital at the Moscow Conservatory, an ensemble performance with Rostropovich and others, and concertos with Kondrashin and Nevorshin, you can enjoy the splendid performances that only the Soviets of that time could have offered. The concerto was performed with Kondrashin and Nevorshin. A precocious prodigy, he made his dashing debut as a teenager. The recordings here are all made in his 20s and 30s, and they offer a glimpse into the virtuosity of a genius at the height of his technical and musical maturity. Naxos Japan
