Matthew Wittor is a composer originally from Canada who is currently based in Finland. His music fuses a diverse range of influences—including old and new cultures, Western traditions, musical elements from around the world, the sacred and the secular, and genres ranging from classical to folk and pop—to create a rich, expressive, and unique musical world. “The World Tree” is a monumental 10-chapter a cappella choral work written in response to the illegal logging of the “Sycamore Gap Tree” in 2023. Based on a text by British author Robert MacFarlane, the work weaves in Norse mythology—featuring the giant tree “Yggdrasil,” which connects the visible world to the heavens and the underworld—while serving as a warning against the destruction of nature, a tribute to those affected, and a wish for a new forest to grow on the site of the incident. The beautiful, tonal music transcends mere sentimentality to explore the deep connection between humanity and nature. The performance is by the Helsinki Chamber Choir, led by Nils Schwekendiek. This renowned duo—which won a 2024 Grammy Award for their collection of Saariaho’s works—carefully brings the piece to life. Naxos Japan
