Johann Nepomuk Dafydt, a native of Austria, studied with Marx and Schoenberg in Vienna and taught at the Leipzig Conservatory from 1934, focusing mainly on instrumental music during the Nazi era. His Symphony No. 3, conceived in 1940, was a transitional work for his postwar style. In his introduction to the work, he says of it, "It is melodically oriented, with a counterpoint texture in which the upper voices take the lead while all the voices are utilized. In his own introduction to the work, he says, "The composition is relatively restrained. The orchestration is relatively modest: no trombones, no tuba, and no percussion other than timpani. The first movement is joyful, the second introspective, the scherzo a double fugue, and the finale a summary of all the previous themes. 1957's Symphony No. 7 is based on the Trio written the previous year and premiered the same year under Müller-Kleis' direction. The dissonances created by the large orchestra are more pronounced here, and counterpoint is not used to any great extent. The importance of the percussion instruments is reminiscent of the New Viennese School, especially Webern's works.The first movement is in sonata form, beginning with timpani, and the second movement is an inventive scherzo with two fugues.
