This is the third volume in a series of recordings of music from the Hanseatic League, an economic alliance of European cities that lasted from the Middle Ages to the 17th century. Following the first collection "Stralsund" (555578) and the second collection "Gdansk (Danzig)" (555647), this volume features the music of "Magdeburg". In the history of music, Magdeburg is famous as the birthplace of Telemann, and this album contains music by cantors from the region who were active 50 to 100 years before Telemann was born. Shortly before the Reformation, Magdeburg, with a population of 30,000, was one of the most prosperous cities in Germany, a member of the Hanseatic League, with many wealthy citizens and an archbishopric. Luther himself preached several times, and the city's early Protestant educational institutions focused on music, which Luther emphasized in his missionary work. The music and writings of early Magdeburg cantors such as Martin Agricola, Gallus Dressler, Leonhard Schlater, Friedrich Weissensee, and Heinrich Grimm, many of whom were printed, spread beyond the city and throughout Germany.The fame of these cantors led the musicians of the region to be known as the "Magdeburg School of Music," which gained great respect and established the city as a musical center. The European Hanseatic Ensemble is an ancient music ensemble founded in 2019 with the goal of researching and presenting the relationship between the Hanseatic League and music. The mother project brings together more than 600 young musicians from all over Europe and holds a music festival and master classes every September in Lübeck, the central city of the Hanseatic League. a specialist in the performance and study of North German music from the 16th-17th centuries. Manfred Cordes founded the Weser Renaissance in 1993 and has recorded over 50 CDs for the CPO label and others, receiving worldwide acclaim for his excellent performances. He has participated in the Hanseatic Ensemble of Europe as conductor and music director, inspiring young musicians of ancient music to perform to their full potential.In this album, eight singers, viola da gamba, zinc, trombone, and positif organ are assembled according to the piece, conveying the charm of the works of the MacDeburg musicians with a variety of sounds.
