Description:

Although Ehrman has recorded many concertos since the SP era, SP recordings of the complete concertos are surprisingly rare, and the pre-WWII recordings are all on HMV (His Master's Voice), which has been reissued here. The two movements of Bach and Vivaldi are different from the contemporary old music style (HIP), and are played in a stately manner with a steady beat. In the slow movement, Hermann's typical cantabile can be heard while maintaining classical dignity. Tchaikovsky's concerto is a work that Auer, Ehrman's teacher, was asked to perform for the first time, but he dismissed it as "unplayable" for a time. Although he gave the first performance to someone else, Auer later recognized the value of this work, revised the score himself, performed it, and taught it to his students. This Hermann disc is the first recording of the piece by Auer's pupil. The score is Auer's edition. The slow tempo of about 35 minutes and the romantic and individualistic singing in many places distinguish this recording from the recent style. The two Beethoven pieces are also sweet and romantic.
