Emilie Meyer has a unique background in that although she showed musical talent from an early age, she did not become a composer in earnest until she was nearly 30 years old. She left behind many romantic works, sometimes incorporating avant-garde harmonies while adhering to the classical style. This album contains three of her seven surviving violin sonatas. Although the exact date of composition is unknown, the D major sonata dates from the 1860s, while the E flat major sonata, reminiscent of Beethoven's sonatas, is assumed to have been written before 1855. The F major sonata was published in 1863, during Meyer's lifetime. Violinist Emmeline Pierre Larsen, who has received critical acclaim for her Felix Drezeke album (555350), is currently working on a complete recording of Meyer's Violin Sonatas. (Naxos Japan)
