Ars Musica

Description:

The early works of Mendelssohn by Ars Musica, a group of young players formed by Dutch choral conductor Patrick van der Linden and his colleagues. The early works, which date back to the composer's youth when he was studying composition under his teacher Zelter, who was eager to restore the music of Bach and other older composers, are characterized by their sound movement and polyphonic structure reminiscent of Baroque music. The orchestra uses basically modern instruments except for natural horns, but the harmonies created by the string ensemble based on non-vibrato period technique are full of transparency, and the chorus is in beautiful harmony as if blended with a precise chorus. The harmony of the string ensemble, which is based on a precise chorus, is crystal-clear.The Baroque-like string symphony and the early Romanticism of the "Mere Old Man" are also on the program, along with such vocal pieces as "The Star of the Sea," in which Nanette Mance's beautiful voice stands out, and the cantata "Only Let the providence of our loving God" that seems to foretell the revival of the "Matthew Passion" the year after it was composed. The brilliant instrumental performance of the lush Symphony No. 1 is also not to be missed. The First Symphony was arranged for small orchestra by Dutch composer Misha Spoelk, and according to Van der Linden, the arrangement was based on the premiere of the piece at Mendelssohn's house for Fanny's birthday celebration.
