Georges Pretre

Description:

The 100th anniversary of Georges Prêtre's birth. A hot collection of live recordings with the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra, of which he was the chief conductor, is now available. There is a first appearance] Georges Prêtre was a conductor whose image changed drastically toward the end of his career. As director of the Paris Opera for a long time, Prêtre gained a reputation as an opera conductor. He was also a master of modern French music, as represented by his Poulenc performances. However, it was not until the beginning of this century, when he was almost 80 years old, that many of us learned that opera and modern France were not the only things Prêtre was known for. He has performed with orchestras in German-speaking countries and conducted symphonic repertoire. In 2008 and 2010, he became the oldest conductor ever to appear at the Vienna Philharmonic's New Year's Concerts, a belated appearance by a true maestro. This time, a collection of live recordings with the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra, where he served as principal conductor from 1996 to 1998 and as honorary conductor for life thereafter, is being released. The tempo, intensity, and other aspects of the music are flexible. At times the melody sings tenaciously, but the artisanal orchestra tightens the sound. The collaboration between the two was superb. In Beethoven's Symphony No. 3 and Brahms's Symphony No. 1, the tempo is shimmered with fine control to create a sense of acceleration and natural liveliness. The "Hungarian Dances" are especially rich. It was a pleasure to hear the frankness of the music, without any pedantry. Bruckner was also in his hidden repertoire. In the Fourth Symphony, too, he moves the tempo, and while retaining expressiveness in the details, he also creates the overall form of the piece. Richard Strauss's symphonic poem sang its melody elegantly and built smoothly to its climax with a careful hand. The melting elegance of the "Knight of Roses" Suite is a little bit different. Berlioz's "Symphonie fantastique" is impressive with its delicate colors like a watercolor painting. The second movement, in particular, is a waltz covered with elegant sounds and accompanied by a strong tame. The increase in tempo in the second half of the movement is as emotional as an opera. The second half of the movement, too, is less bizarre, but it brings out many of the orchestration's virtuosity.(1/2) Naxos Japan
