The "Prayer Sonata" at the beginning of this work is known as the "Moses Variations," a variation on a theme from Rossini's opera "Moses in Egypt. Usually, the piano and violin version published in 1855 is performed, but this album contains the original version with orchestral accompaniment, in which I. Vescovo completed the missing parts of the solo part. This is the world premiere recording. Also, the section for violins in irregular tuning, the Capriccio, and the Agitato are unpublished works, and are also world premiere recordings. The final piece, an introduction and variations on the theme of "The Depressed Heart," is an extremely well-known and brilliant piece with superb technique throughout. Originally printed as a supplement to "Violin Tales" published by Carl Gurr (1787-1848) in 1830, this score is still in common use today, but no complete autograph manuscript survives, and Gurr claimed to have notated it from his own memory (see Berlin's (Paganini's unfinished autograph score, preserved in the National Library in Berlin, matches Guehl's printed score.)
