Martinu (1890-1959)

Description:

Roger Norrington retired from conducting after his last performance with the Royal Northern Sinfonia in November 2021. On this first release, we hear Martineau's symphonies, a rarity in Norrington's repertoire. Martineau's six symphonies were composed between 1942 and 1953, while he was in the United States. No. 5 is a confident work that Martineau himself described in an interview with The New York Times as "a well-crafted, organic, ordered work. No. 6 was commissioned for the 75th anniversary of the Boston Symphony Orchestra in 1955, and was reportedly written with Charles Munch, the conductor who gave the first performance, in mind. Martineau subtitled the piece "Symphonic Fantasy" because he considered it to be fundamentally different from his previous symphonies. It is a free and fantastical work in contrast to the Fifth, which emphasizes order and structure, with a mixture of various musical ideas, including the melody from Dvorak's Requiem. Norrington was the principal conductor of the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra for 13 years (1998-2011), and in order to approach the sound image that the audience had at the time of composition, he adjusted the size, arrangement, and playing style of the orchestra based on historical research and adopted a non-vibrato playing style for strings as the basis for the "Stuttgart sound. He developed his own style called "Stuttgart Sound" based on the non-vibrato playing of string instruments. The performance style that maintains transparency and three-dimensionality and reveals the structure of the piece has been effective in 20th century works such as Elgar, but it will be very interesting to see how they will make Martineau sound even further down the road in time.
