Bach, Carl Philipp Emanuel (1714-1788)

Description:

Jean Rondeau, a harpsichordist of the new generation, is known for his fresh interpretation of C.P.E. Bach's enigmatic masterpiece from the last years of his life, which is not bound by the conventional wisdom of ancient music, but never strays from a reasonable philosophy. The new quartet Nevermind is a remarkable new sensation, a quartet of ancient instruments that has a strong personality as strong as that of this genius, and yet they weave together a rare ensemble that is not drowned in their own individuality. This recording is of C.P.E. Bach, "the second son of the great Bach," who was known for his style that set him apart from his contemporaries even during his lifetime and earned him international fame. This is a good selection of his works, centering on the enigmatic "Quartet" from his last years, which is particularly unique among his remaining works, and accompanied by two well-developed arranged movements. The keyboard part can be played by either harpsichord or fortepiano since the composer did not specify the instruments, and the "Quartet" can be played by three players since one part is allocated to each of the left and right hands on the keyboard, so the interpretation is largely at the discretion of the players. It is also unique in that the viola is given a large part to play without the violin. These three pieces were composed in the middle of the classical period when Mozart had finished most of his piano concertos, in the last years of C.P.E. Bach's life, but the style is rather similar to his early and middle period. The two arrangements are based on solo keyboard pieces, but they sound as if they were written from the beginning with the same compositional structure as this piece from the last years of his life. The ensemble members also provide extensive commentary, making this an exciting musical experience that can only be enjoyed at the forefront of the ancient music scene. Naxos Japan
