[A remarkable work following the Debussy disc! Dutilleux and Ledoux, presented by a specialist in French piano music] Dutilleux's sonatas, written just after World War II, have been noted for their stylistic connection with Debussy's "For Piano," written just after World War I. The "Three Preludes" are three pieces: "From Shadows and Silence," written for Arthur Rubinstein; "From the Same One Chord," written for Claude Elfe; and "A Play of Contrasts," written for the 1988 William Kapelle Competition at the suggestion of Eugene Istomin. The three pieces are a compilation of three sonatas, "From the Same One Chord" and "A Play of Contrasts" written for the William Capell Competition in 1988 at the suggestion of Eugene Istomin. Surgir, by Belgian-born Ledoux, uses harmonics and other techniques such as internal playing (hand-pressing the strings), but its unique rhythms, dynamics, and harmony make it a very enjoyable work to listen to. This is a sequel to Debussy (CYP1678), released in March 2018 to great acclaim by Brussels-based Elodie Vignon.
