Description:
Serbian composer Vasily Mokranyats. Born into a musical family, his father Jovan was the nephew of Stefan Mokranjacz, who is known for his contribution to the development of modern Serbian music, and his mother Elena was an excellent cellist, Vasily showed interest in music from an early age, first studying piano at the Belgrade Music Academy. However, his interest turned to composition and he gave up piano. He decided to pursue a career as a composer and educator. He then taught at the Serbian Music School (where his great-uncle's name Stefan is listed) from 1948 to 1956, and later served as president of the Serbian Society of Composers, making a great contribution to music education in Serbia during his lifetime. However, he took his own life suddenly at the age of 60, leaving many of his works unfinished, and not much research has been done on his works. Anyway, this 2-CD set contains all of his piano works. His early works are quite technical, but as he approached his later years, his music became more refined with lyrical melodies, and the differences in style can be fully appreciated.Pianist Martinovits is a good friend of Mokranyats and now founds the Vasily Mokranyats Foundation to promote his works.
