Description:

Puccini(1858-1924):Opera "Fairy Vigli," Act 2, Ferdinando Fontana:ScriptVillageAnna, a village girl, and Roberto, a young man. They vow to marry, but when Roberto sets off on a journey to the city, he forgets Anna and indulges in debauchery. Anna waits for him to return, but when she hears of his disappearance, she is so distressed that her life ends in agony. She transforms herself into Vigli the Fairy and takes the returning Roberto into her never-ending dance circle... "Vigli the Fairy" was the first opera composed by the 25-year-old Puccini. Recommended by his teacher Ponchielli, Puccini began writing it to enter an opera in one act competition sponsored by the music publisher Sonzogno. The work was almost abandoned, but it caught the attention of Arrigo Boito, and was premiered at a local theater to great acclaim. After the premiere, when the company signed a contract with Ricordi, it was revised to a two-act version. This version is now performed almost exclusively. Puccini's youthful but passionate and beautiful music to a sad story with its origins in an old legend.Maria Teresa Leva's rich voice as Vigli, Caimi's naive expression as Roberto, the indecisive lover, and Fabbian's soft voice as Guglielmo, the father who loves his daughter, all three sing wonderfully. Saponaro's direction is a spectacular stage performance that beautifully expresses the enmity of the beautiful but wicked fairies, the Villi, through their dance. Naxos Japan
