Born in Poland, Tansman was active in Paris after WWI. As a Jew, he fled to the United States in 1941 with the help of friends, including Charles Chaplin, and returned to Paris after World War II, but was unable to ride the wave of avant-garde music and became a forgotten figure. This album contains mainly works from Tansman's later life, all of which are world premiere recordings. The album is a collection of works that skillfully combine his Polish identity, the strong influence of Ravel, Stravinsky, and other composers who were active during his first years in Paris, and his Jewish roots, with Schoenberg, with whom he had a close friendship during his stay in the United States, casting a strong shadow over his music. Czech pianist, harpsichordist, and composer Giorgio Koukl, known as a Martineau specialist through his work with Filksny, is also highly regarded for his works with Cherepnin, Lurier, and Tansman. Here, too, he gives a colorful performance of some of his best-known works by Tansmann, with a passion for making them rooted in the piano repertoire. Naxos Japan
