Directed by the most talked-about maverick of the moment, Dmitri Chernyakov, this is no run-of-the-mill “Don Giovanni.” The entire action takes place inside the mansion of the Knight Commander (who comes across as extremely wealthy). As per the original libretto, Donna Anna is his daughter, and Don Ottavio is her fiancé. However, Zerlina is portrayed as Anna’s daughter (from a previous marriage), and Masetto is her fiancé. Donna Elvira is portrayed as Anna’s cousin. Don Giovanni is Elvira’s husband, but his worn-out, middle-aged appearance clearly makes him an outsider within the family. Leporello is a young relative of the Commendatore who lives in the mansion and senses a kindred spirit in Giovanni. In this way, Chernyakov has crafted a production of *Don Giovanni* in which Giovanni wanders through a glamorous yet hollow and hypocritical world, successfully delving deep into the human psyche. Given the nature of this production, the cast is of paramount importance. Bo Skoufs, for whom this role is a perfect fit, plays Don Giovanni. Having specialized in the role since his youth, Skoufs’s singing is flawless, and he is also the ideal choice for the portrayal of Don Giovanni that Chernyakov demands. The three female leads—Marlis Petersen as Anna, Kristine Opolais as Elvira, and Szesztyin Avemo as Zerlina—are all stunningly beautiful, and their costumes make them even more captivating. Leporello is played by Kyle Kettelsen, an American-born baritone whose popularity is skyrocketing. And the veteran Ukrainian bass Anatoli Kocherga delivers a commanding performance as the Commander. French conductor Louis Langrée, known for his expertise in Mozart, leads the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra—playing period instruments—to deliver a lively and spirited performance. King International
