This is a live video of Tennstedt performing Mahler's Fourth in 1977. Although recorded in mono, his passion-filled sound conveys a Mahler interpretation without the slightest hesitation. Tennstedt's music is more vivid than that of great conductors of the past such as Barbirolli, Karajan, and Furtwängler. His Mahler also has a special flavor, with an overwhelming expressiveness and exuberance that has enough centripetal force to truly satisfy many audiences. Here we are treated to Mahler's relatively small-scale, idyllic, and heavenly No. 4. The soloist, Brin-Julson, is an American soprano who has been interested in twelve-tone singing since her early career, and has given some of her best performances of works by Boulez and others.Simultaneously recorded is Mozart's "Haffner" Symphony, another masterful performance in the German tradition.
