Description:

Furtwängler's third day back live based on the original DRA (Deutsche Rundfunk Archiv) source, which is different from the DG version! ALTUS has licensed from the Magistrale label the limited production SACD single layer disc of Furtwängler's Third Day Live with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra to ALTUS. The original source material from the DRA (German Radio Archives) is the same as the Magistrale disc (MG17600102/regular CD), and ALTUS has mastered it from scratch for SACD using its own technology, making it a one-of-a-kind sound disc. In many of Furtwängler's broadcast recordings, the volume level must have been adjusted at the time of recording in order to record well with the equipment of the time. In some cases, Furtwängler's broadcast recordings were made with the aim of "recording the music so that it can be heard" by balancing the overall sound level, turning up the volume in areas that were too quiet, and turning down the volume in areas that were too loud. This DRA recording of "Fate" is no less vivid in sound quality, but the volume of the 4th movement is lower than that of the 1st movement (despite the addition of the trombones and the increased musical excitement). Therefore, ALTUS' new "re-Dynamics series" attempts to revive the original dynamics using modern mastering techniques. The range of Furtwängler's strength and weakness was a surprise to everyone. In the bridge between the third and fourth movements, the long crescendo from the weakest note, which is almost inaudible, to the strongest note, which shoots up to the heavens, must have sounded truly monumental. This disc carefully reconstructs these dynamics one by one, while keeping a close eye on the balance between the front and back and the whole. The pitch has also been subtly adjusted to achieve a sound closer to the original. The sound quality of the "re-Dynamics series" is perfectly suited to the wide range of the SACD, and only with the SACD will you be able to relive this magnificent change in sound and Furtwängler's superb performance. This is a limited production, so early acquisition is highly recommended. The recording location is indicated as Titania Palast in accordance with DRA's documentation. King International Inc.
