Description:

Dan Jenks' first album with Sean Phillips is now available on CD for the first time worldwide (original release: 1981/Private Label)! This is the only album independently produced and released by Dan Jenks (real name Daniel Aaron Jenks) in Indianapolis in 1981. As you can see from the cover, the flute becomes the main instrument along with the guitar, and in fact is featured on 6 of the 10 tracks. On track [1], he further demonstrates his multi-instrumentalist abilities by playing fretless bass, electric piano, and mini-moog all by himself (overdubbing). The light electric piano on this soft-rock track is impressive, and the classical flute solo in the second half of the track gives the listener a sense of the album as a whole. The vocals are also soft, matching the sound of the background, just like the mild-mannered expression on the cover. The next track, [2], has a somber cello introduction that develops into a thrilling ensemble with the flute. The ensemble's ability to move slowly and freely between the flute and cello is a key element of the sound throughout the album. The light riffs are reminiscent of George Benson ("Breezin'")[6].Sean Phillips, born in Texas and known for his work with Donovan in the 1960s and a series of progressive A&M albums in the early 1970s, joined the band on guest vocals on [7], a slight change from the tone of the previous songs, and even the lyrics give the song a serious feel. The last song [10] begins with a mini-moog soundtrack of rain and thunder. From the slow beginning of the song, Phillips' backing vocals create a fantastic atmosphere, and the song gradually builds up to an uplifting climax before the album quietly closes with another storm sound effect. The last three solo live tracks [11], [12], and [13] are bonus tracks.
