An unspoken masterpiece full of club DJ & sampling material. The only album by Barba Yaga, which has attracted attention due to its reappraisal from rare grooves, is finally available on CD (original release: 1978/OLIVIA RECORDS). Barba Yaga is a jazz/funk group consisting of 10 women based in Portland, Northwest Oregon. This is their only album released in 1978 on Bloodleaf, an Olivia Records subsidiary (distribution) founded in 1973 by the feminist group. Olivia's policy was to bridge the gap between talented women and the recording industry, and to have "women" take charge of all operations, not to mention musicians and staff. Baba Yaga's music is "jazz" in a nutshell, but with a pop flexibility that appeals to more than just the average jazz fan. The variety of songs includes straight-ahead hard bop, groovy bossa jazz, Bay Area funk, and vocally oriented sweet soul/smooth jazz numbers.The album also includes a variety of traditional dance tunes from Eastern Europe, and there is no shortage of DJ material, such as a number that begins with a drum break.
