*Moussolou* is the debut album by Oumou Sangare, one of Mali’s most renowned singers, recorded in 1989 and released in 1991. The title means “women” in the Bambara language and symbolizes the theme that runs throughout the album. In Mali, where a male-dominated society and polygamy remain deeply entrenched, she drew on her own experiences to sing candidly about love, marriage, independence, and women’s rights; her courageous and groundbreaking message resonated deeply with audiences. Musically, the album was also groundbreaking. Centered around Benogo Diakite’s masterful performance on the kamalengoni (a youth harp), it fused the powerful rhythms characteristic of “Wasulu”—the traditional music of the Wasulu region—with contemporary arrangements. While maintaining deep respect for tradition, the album produced a fresh sound and became a massive hit not only in Mali but throughout West Africa, catapulting the young Sangare to stardom. Nick Gold, founder of World Circuit, discovered this album through a cassette tape handed to him by Ali Farka Touré in Bamako; captivated by the music he heard playing throughout the city, he decided to release it internationally. This marked the beginning of a long-standing collaborative relationship with Oumou Sangare. “Moussolou,” which fuses traditional Malian music with a sharp message about modern society, is highly acclaimed as a landmark work representing African and world music. It is also a monumental album that established Oumou Sangare as one of Africa’s leading artists and a powerful advocate for women’s rights. To commemorate the 40th anniversary of World Circuit Records, this album is being reissued on transparent turquoise vinyl.
