This latest release, DREAM BOX, documents a variety of guitar sounds. The title has multiple meanings. Box" is jazz slang for a hollow-body guitar, and "Dream" is an expression of Metheny's unique imagination and "dream logic. Pat Metheny commented on the album as follows: "I'm excited about the new music, the new songs, and the new sound. I often record a variety of songs and sound files to try out new songs, new (or old) guitars, new standards, or something new, and I honestly hide them in folders where they can never be heard again. I often describe myself as "living on output," but the truth is that I usually have very little time to input anything. However, when it comes to touring, I have more free time in a day, such as during the bus ride and in my hotel room.The past year has been a year of touring, with about 160 shows around the world, so I took advantage of that time to go through the contents of a forgotten folder that had been hidden away in the drive to see if I could find any interesting soundtracks," he said. "As I visited that folder repeatedly, the program gradually I was very surprised to find that it had come to mean something cohesive. Unintentionally, it was as if fragments of my past had led me to a destination I had never imagined. The nine songs here are my favorites, and they are very unique to me. Music, to me, exists in an elusive state and often comes down to us at its best when it is swung without a particular intention. I couldn't be happier if each of you finds your own dream in the music recorded here."
