Isserlis will perform the cello concerto, cello sonata, and string quintet by Luigi Boccherini (1743-1805), a brilliant cellist who was also described as "the music of angels" and Isserlis as having "a consistent elegance. This is the quintessence of Boccherini's music, which has not quite achieved the fame it deserves. The subtitle "Frog" given to his early work, the concerto in G475, is rarely used, but the leaping pitches of the theme in the last movement actually evoke a "frog," and Isserlis dares to use it to see "whether the use of such a little-known nickname will increase the popularity of this work, and whether this nickname will stick. Isserlis explains that he chose the nickname to see "whether the use of such a little-known nickname would increase the popularity of the work and whether it would stick. The final track is an encore, the "Minuet," which everyone has heard at least once and is probably the best known of Boccherini's works. Again, the booklet includes a detailed commentary by Isserlis himself. *Recorded March 28-29 & December 11-13, 2023 at St. Silas the Martyr Church, Kentish Town, London. (Tokyo M-Plus)
