The power of the orchestra! The Symphonie fantastique" arranged by Jean-François Esser for two pianos, with Marie-Josèphe Jude, is a remarkable album to open the Berlioz year. Jean-François Essert arranged Berlioz's Symphonie fantastique for two pianos and performed it with Marie-Joseph Jude. Liszt's arrangement of Berlioz's Symphonie fantastique for solo piano is well known, but even Liszt was limited in his ability to cover the piece with ten fingers, since it is a thoroughly orchestral piece. Some versions for duet were also made, but they could not always reproduce the parts where the ranges overlapped. For some reason, there has never been a two-piano version, but the "Columbus's egg" idea that the most suitable form for completely non-piano music is this form, which allows the performer a great deal of freedom, was realized. The arrangement by the famous pianist Esser is brilliant and effective. The French elegance of the "Ball," the power of the "March to the Decapitations," and the madness of the final movement are all full of richness. The piece is full of the high voltage excitement typical of technical piano works.Even more interesting is the use of a 1928 Pleyel two-way piano instead of a regular piano. This was a large rectangular instrument with keys on both sides, developed by the company in 1897, and capable of playing two pianos in one. A total of 74 were manufactured, and it is said that Cortot and Horchowski also owned one. This time, the performance and recording were made on a rare original instrument in the collection of the Musée de la Musique in Paris. The uniformity of sound, which cannot be achieved by using two pianos in different conditions, is astonishing, and an ideal piano version of the Symphonie fantastique was born. King International
