Description:

100th Anniversary of Debussy's Death Release Debussy with superb members including Faust, Kellas, Melnikov, and Mestre! Harmoniumundi's series commemorating the 100th anniversary of Debussy's death, titled "The Last Sonatas," features a remarkable disc with Faust, Kellas, Melnikov, Mestre, and Tamestit! Debussy had intended to compose six sonatas for various instruments in his later years, but actually died the year after completing the three works included here. The final piece in this plan was the Violin Sonata, which was literally Debussy's last work. From the delicate chords played by Melnikov at the beginning of the work, we are immediately drawn into the world.Faust's performance has a mysterious and cute air, but at the same time, it is very detailed and expressive, making us believe that we must not miss a single note, even a rest. In a letter to a friend about the Sonata for Flute, Viola, and Harp, Debussy wrote, "This is a work from a time when I knew a little more about how to compose than I do now. It is like Debussy many years ago, yes, like Debussy around the time of the 'Nocturnes'". The Songs of Bilitis and the Six Ancient Epitaphs seem to merge with the liturgy of ancient French clavesan music, and this work, full of unique charm, can be heard with the best members of the group. Magali Monnier has been the principal flute of the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France since 2003, and is a virtuoso who won the first prize at the Munich International Music Competition in 2004. This will be her first appearance with Harmonia Mundi. She is playing a flute by Louis Lot (a representative of the old flutes, whose workshop was established in 1855 and existed until 1951), which was played by Joseph Rampal (1895-1983) and his son Jean-Pierre Rampal (1922-2002), and a harp, which was also used by Les Siecle. The harp was also used by Les Siecle, making this a rare opportunity to enjoy the sound of Debussy's time. The cello sonata is the first of the last three sonatas to be completed. Here we will hear it performed by Kellas and the Spanish Perianes, a face to face performance. The delicate coloring of the work is superb. The performance is more detailed and expressive, with a sense of "playfulness" in the exquisite intervals.Kellas recorded Debussy's Cello Sonata with Alexandre Tharaud in 2008, and the sharpness of his performance is remarkable, and the change in his performance over the past 10 years is also very perceptible. The solo piano works are all from his later years. They are played by Tanguy de Villiencourt. He is a young French virtuoso who is active in both solo and chamber music, and his technique is superb, not only with the superb virtuosity of Liszt, but also with the perfect command of classical and contemporary works. The meticulous performances by these virtuoso players give us a new appreciation of the diversity of Debussy's world of works from his later years. King International
