Featuring MIKEWATT! An alternative country album from 2025 by a Tokyo-based, former LADDERBACK member and American singer-songwriter! JHOLMES is an alternative punk singer-songwriter who moved from North Carolina to Tokyo. In the late ’90s, he was active in the chaotic emo band THELADDERBACK, and today he is a maverick deeply involved in Japan’s underground scene as the frontman of FVRMN (Fever Moon), a new band influenced by acts like LEATHERFACE and JAWBREAKER. Building on the energetic and melodic punk/power pop approach featured on the band’s 2024 album *BACKTOTHEWHIP*, he has developed his own unique brand of alternative country as a solo artist. This latest 2025 studio album was created alongside his work with FVRMN. Featuring an all-star lineup of guests—including legendary bassist Mike Watt, known for his work with The Stooges and The Minutemen, and Matt Tech, guitarist for The Weirdos—the album vividly captures an ensemble that fuses elements of alternative rock and psychedelia. From “BLUEJEANS,” with its light, bouncy guitar and gentle pedal steel, to “THEDAYYOUWEREBORN,” where a lyrical melody paints a scene like a movie still, and “PUNKROCKREVUE,” which channels the spirit of punk rock through a roots music lens—these are just a few of the 10 tracks that radiate dynamic beauty amidst a sense of melancholy. Transcending the confines of mere alternative country, a guitar style reminiscent of Johnny Marr and lyrics laced with dark humor lend the entire work a mysterious atmosphere. This album carries on the spirit of WILCO and NICK CAVE while presenting a unique brand of romanticism. It marks a new milestone in the artist’s career, the culmination of masterful songwriting and meticulous production.
