Description:
This is the third album in Stéphane Oliva’s solo film music series. It offers a jazz-infused interpretation befitting the innovative films of Jean-Luc Godard. This is the third album in French pianist Stéphane Oliva’s solo film music series, focusing specifically on the music from Godard’s films. As the album title “vague-” suggests, it features many works from the so-called Nouvelle Vague era, with masterpieces from this period—such as *Breathless*, *A Woman Is a Woman*, *Village of the Damned*, and *Pierrot le Fou*—shining brightly. There are surely ladies and young ladies whose hearts flutter at Jean-Paul Belmondo’s brilliant and masterful performances, as well as gentlemen who are stirred by memories of their love for the beautiful Anna Karina. It was also a period when the creativity of Marshall Solal, Michel Legrand, and others left an indelible mark on the soundtracks. The reason Godard’s films have been so extensively analyzed and interpreted throughout history, across cultures, is none other than their extreme originality—both in narrative style and technique. He favors improvisational direction, and his films often lack a clear plot or follow unconventional narrative structures. The album title, “Vaguement” (Vaguely), likely refers to this, and it also seems to allude to the improvisational style of jazz performance. Here, Oliva has unearthed a treasure trove of exquisite melodies, polished them, and presented them to us; however, the way he has polished them might be better described as a film interpretation rather than a musical one. A prime example is how she portrays Nana (Karina) with a delicate soundscape reminiscent of an innocent angel, while delving into a psychoanalytic diagnosis of Ferdinand (Belmondo). Oliva demonstrates a strong commitment to both the micro and the macro, leaving nothing to chance. It can be enjoyed as a jazz-inspired interpretation befitting Godard’s works.
