Every year at the time of Advent, shepherds would come down from the mountains to play and sing in front of the small altars to the Virgin in the streets and stores of Rome, Naples, and other Italian cities, and the inhabitants were rewarded with joy, food, wine, and money. Inspired by these Italian pastoral Christmas traditions, Dorothee Oberlinger has composed this album of concertos and vocal pieces that are associated with Christmas in the Baroque era. Alessandro Scarlatti's (1660-1725) cantata "Oh, Poor Bethlehem" features the famous Baroque soprano Dorothee Meals. Arcangelo Corelli's (1653-1713) colorful Christmas Concerto and Giovanni Antonio Guido's (1675-1729) "Winter" are dynamic interpretations of the winter season, both the icy winds, the time of "war and peace" at the time, and the cheerful quiet of the The piece is a work that is both a work of art and a work of music.
