Description:
Rafaela Gromes' latest release is a collection of rare cello works commemorating the bicentennial of Offenbach's birth! Born in Munich in 1991, she began studying cello at the age of 4 and made her debut as a soloist at the age of 14 playing Gulda's cello concerto. She studied at the Leipzig Conservatory for four years from 2010 with Wen-Sing Yang in Munich, and also with Reichard Ratko, Peter Bruns, David Geringas, and Wolfgang Boettcher. Yo-Yo Ma has been praised for his "courageous curiosity and energy, not only in technique, but also in his personal charm." His two albums for Sony Classical have been highly praised for "engagingly crafted performances with perfect technique, intonation, and high concentration. Offenbach is best known for his operettas and operas such as "Heaven and Hell" and "The Tales of Hoffmann," but he learned the cello from his father from childhood and entered the Paris Conservatory. After graduating, Offenbach became a cellist in an orchestra, and in the salons of high society he was known as the "cellist of the cello," and composed many cello works. He composed many cello works, mostly for Offenbach's own recitals, which he premiered himself. This album commemorates Offenbach's bicentennial in 2019, and the pieces on it are now rarely performed and only a few recordings exist. Over the past 40 years, Offenbach's research has progressed, discovering lost scores and previously unknown works, and "Tarantella" is the world premiere recording of Offenbach's work. While some of Offenbach's operettas are captivating in their joy and serenity, these cello works are lyrically romantic and fantastical with a touch of elegance that should be familiar to subsequent operas and operettas. Rafaela Gromes takes those things and presents an enchanting work filled with melodic beauty. The "Duet for Two Cellos" is a difficult piece to match technically and ensemble-wise, but her teacher, Wen-Shing Yang, is there to support her and plays it beautifully. The final track, "Hoffmann's Boat Song," is beautifully sung by the two cellos in an arrangement by Julian Ream, who also provided piano accompaniment. Sony Music
