Here comes the definitive recording by the Bach expert. The John Passion, one of the most popular religious works of all time, along with the Matthew Passion, is an oratorio based on the Passion of Jesus in the New Testament Gospel of John, first performed on Good Friday, April 7, 1724, the first Good Friday after Bach's arrival at Thomas Kantor in Leipzig. It was premiered on April 7, 1724. Compared to "Matthew," it is more dramatic because of the more choral singing, and more accessible because of its shorter playing time.
