World premiere recording on 2 CDs of this massive choral work composed and conducted by Academy Award, Grammy, and British Academy Award winner and UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador Tan Dun of China, released by Decca. Involving a huge choir, a large orchestra, six percussionists, many soloists including folk singers, and players of traditional Chinese instruments and dancing pipa, this monumental work is the first "Passion" about a Buddhist rather than a Christian story. Tan Dun was inspired by a visit to the many and varied ancient caves in Dunhuang with their myriad musical murals, "These musical paintings depict more than 4000 instruments, 3000 musicians, and 500 bands. I was so deeply moved that I could hear most of the sounds coming from that mural". After several years of research and compositional struggle to revive the murals, the Buddha Passion was completed in 2019.Created in the foothills of the Himalayas and inspired by Chinese and Sanskrit texts, the engaging and life-inspiring score blends ancient Buddhist teachings with the musical tradition of J.S. Bach's Passion with hypnotic orchestral textures and oriental vocal techniques. Recorded in 2019 at the Shanghai Oriental Art Center with the Orchestre National de Lyon and International Choir Academy Lubeck, conducted by Tan Dun, along with renowned Chinese soloists. Tan Dun is best known for his music for the film "Green Destiny," but is also famous for his many commissions, including Lan Lan, the Metropolitan Opera, the Beijing Olympics, Shanghai Disneyland, and Google's YouTube Symphony Orchestra.
