Description:

Two "Songs of the Earth" from the East and West, where history and culture meet. Centuries-old Chinese poems come alive in a new recording by Long Yu and the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra. Songs of the Earth," their second album to be released worldwide by Deutsche Grammophon. The world premiere recording of Ye Xiaogang's contemporary piece "Song of the Earth" is performed along with Mahler's symphony. Ye Xiaogang's ambitious new work, which combines centuries-old traditions from both East and West with contemporary styles, is paired with Mahler's "Song of the Earth," based on a German translation of the Tang poetry, and sheds new light on the appeal of each. Long Yu conducts the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, which commissioned Ye Xiaogang to create this fascinating encounter of history and culture in this work. Mezzo-soprano Michelle DeYoung and tenor Brian Jagde join Mahler for the Mahler work, while soprano Zhang Liping and baritone Shen Yang join Ye Xiaogang for the work. 2 CD set. 'Our countries are far apart. Most people are so immersed in their own life experiences that they don't even try to understand other cultures... Yet comparing these two works gives us two different views.I see how Europeans feel about love, joy and death, and how the Chinese feel about the same things." (Long Yu) Universal Music/IMS
