Description:
Peter Bernstein, Brad Meldow, Christian McBride, and Greg Hutchinson... What a gorgeous and so-so album (with a combination of members that now seems a bit unusual)! But these are the members of "Signs of Life," the hottest album of the 90s, recorded by the Dutch Criss Cross, who had caught the new movement emerging in New York in the 90s. It was recorded at a time when the crossover movement was somewhat on the wane and a new acoustic jazz movement was emerging in New York, and was released in 1995. Signs of Life" also featured Brad Meldow, and was a hot topic at the time. This album is truly a record of the reunion of those members for the first time in 20 years and their live performance! The members have had their own dramas over the past 20 years. For Brad Meldow, his debut album was released in 1995, and his Art of The Trio releases came later.Christian McBride's debut album was in 1994. In other words, "Signs of Life" is a monumental work that records a performance in a pivotal year for the members of this generation. For Peter Bernstein, "Signs of Life" is his second work. Compared to the performances of "Merdoux" and "McBride," his performance has not changed in style, but has remained firmly rooted in the jazz canon. This album, too, is basically straight-ahead! This album, too, is basically straight-ahead. However, this album proves that the performance has changed deeply over the past 20 years. Signs of Life" sounded like a sort of all-star session of the same generation, but the performance is vivid in a live setting where no reworking is possible.Christian McBride's groove-filled, bone-dry four-beat bass, Hutchinson's supple cymbals and powerful drums, Merdoux's unfathomable ability to play it straight! And Peter Bernstein, who plays melodious solos as if they were written in a musical score written entirely in single tones! There is the obvious confident expression of a generation that debuted in the 90's in a rather subdued manner, and there is the spirited performance of a generation that has now become a mid-career player in the scene. Because it was a live performance, all but two of the songs were longer than 10 minutes. However, there is no impression that they are long. Incidentally, the opening and fourth songs are from "Signs of Life," and it is interesting to note that 20 years later, they are playing the same songs and recording them as works of art. Recorded not at Smoke, but at Jazz at Lincoln Center, this is a performance by four members who have crossed over and worked majestically as musicians in New York City. This is a milestone in the history of jazz, and a release to watch in 2017.
