The charm of Goulda's youthful, free-flowing pianism. Goulda's 20s: A record of Friedrich Goulda, whose popularity has not waned in the more than 20 years since he died. This is an excellent collection of recordings of Goulda in his 20s. Only Mozart's "Piano Sonata No. 17" was recorded when he was 18 years old, and it is full of bursting charm. Not only Mozart and Beethoven, but also Richard Strauss' "Burleske" and Weber's small concertos are welcome. Also of interest was Chopin's Piano Concerto No. 1, which was reorchestrated by the Russian quintet Balakirev and sounds like Rachmaninoff. Gourda's pianism, full of a sense of improvisation, is fascinating. Ravel's "Gaspard de la Nuit" has a jazz-like feel to it. All this at a reasonable price. A must-have album for piano lovers.
