Description:

The third installment of "The Art of the Virtuoso," a diverse collection of solo concertos from the 18th century, Katerva Musica is an ancient music ensemble active in Westphalia, located in the western part of the Ruhr region of Germany. The group was founded in 1998 by Elke Fabry and Wolfgang Fabry. The ensemble is known for its lively performances on original instruments, not only reviving historical music but also incorporating a modern approach. The third volume in Catelva Musica's 25th anniversary recording series, "The Art of the Virtuoso," is a collection of 18th century solo concertos, including Franz Benda's dramatic flute concerto, vibrant chamber music by Telemann, Graun, and Vivaldi, and the rare Bach Sinfonia BWV 1045 is included. Franz Benda, a member of a family of musicians active in 18th century Bohemia, was appointed concertmaster of the court orchestra of Frederick the Great in 1771, a position he held for the rest of his life. He left numerous works, including symphonies and violin concertos, but six of his flute concertos have been preserved in manuscript form in the Badenisches Landesbibliothek in Karlsruhe. In Friedrich the Great's Sans Souci Palace, the court orchestra played nightly works by outstanding musicians such as C.P.E. Bach, Kwanz, Benda, and the Graun brothers, as well as the great king himself, and Benda's flute concerto conveys the vitality of the time. J.S. Bach's Sinfonia BWV 1045, reportedly the introductory movement to a lost church cantata, was probably the original concerto for solo violin, string ensemble, and basso continuo; only 149 bars remain, but it concludes with a short cadenza and a performance of the opening ritornello theme.
