Oasis (Shravanam), a spiritual masterpiece by one of the greatest contemporary vocalists of South Indian classical and Karnataka music, is now available for the first time on analog in a high sound quality, reverse-facing format. Oasis," a 1979 album by Italian electronic music pioneer Il Guadiano del Faro. Japanese fusion guitarist Yuji Toriyama's "Choice Works 1982-1985," a compilation of experimental instrumental music from the early 1980s. The first analog reissue of "Illuminated Audio," a 2003 dub remix of Ethiopian singer Gigi's debut album by the great Bill Laswell, and the East London-based label continues its genre-bending, border-crossing releases. Kay Suzuki, who produces the label, has been captivated by the album since hearing it around 2011: "The best thing about it is that it's a very different sound quality from the old records of Indian classical music, which were recorded in a studio in 2000. I was first struck by the high quality of the production, which was made by a master of studio recording. Every time I listen to it, I am amazed at how such a small ensemble has created such a cosmic and vast soundscape, and each note is so precisely crafted.All of the percussion sounds of the arcane beat are clearly audible, and each one fits into its own pocket of perfectly positioned space and timing. Just following the groove takes my consciousness into a timeless space, but when I hear her gospel-singer-like vibrato over this gorgeous drone, I hear even finer melodies within the melody, like a kaleidoscope. As Jeremy Gilbert, one of the DJs of Beauty & The Beats and a professor of sociology with a deep knowledge of Indian classical music, states in the liner notes, her ability to express a deep spiritual world backed by her mastery of her craft is a reflection of the common purpose of all traditional Indian classical music: devotion to the divine.
