The performance of this large-scale work was realized at the 1997 festival at the suggestion of Toru Takemitsu, who was a close friend of Seiji Ozawa on the 40th anniversary of the Saito Kinen Orchestra and the 50th anniversary of Hideo Saito's death. As a result of meticulous research, the orchestra used baroque bows on modern instruments to create a different kind of music, one that is resilient yet restrained.
