This album celebrates the 100th anniversary of Bernstein's birth, opening with the overture to "Candide," a favorite in concert halls around the world. The centerpiece of the album is a suite from Bernstein's beloved ballet "Fancy Free," set in New York City, which tells the American story of three sailors who are granted a 24-hour landing permit to enjoy a moment of romance in the glamorous city of New York. The story is very American. First performed in 1944, this legendary ballet has been performed over 200 times since its premiere. The world premiere recording, "Anniversary for Orchestra," is an orchestral version of a small piece Bernstein wrote for family, friends, and loved ones from 1944 to 1989.The original four-volume suite for piano was published in 1944, 1948, 1964, and 1989, but Sunderland, who performed the entire work in 2016, felt that "the essence of Bernstein's music is contained in this suite," and selected 11 pieces from the total of 29 and carefully orchestrated the The final piece, "Wonderful Town," is a piece of music that is a masterpiece of Bernstein's music.
