The album, Mitski's fifth studio album, was produced by longtime collaborator Patrick Hyland, who consciously avoided layered vocals and harmonies, based on the image of a "lone singer in the spotlight on stage". The production of the album is said to have been done in such a way as to consciously avoid vocal layering and harmonies.Mitski commented on the album, the first in two years, which delves into the loneliness of "becoming a symbol" and "becoming a persona other than one's true self.
