The latest disc by Mutsuyuki Motomura, a recorder player with a gradation of taste from French to Italian, is a French Baroque sonata entitled "Tenshi. Spreading the wings of insects for use as specimens. The program is a beautiful picture of French and Italian taste in sonatas, with small character pieces as well. Philidor's sonata is a French piece that designates the "recorder" as an instrument. The work by Shedeville was falsely published as Vivaldi's Op. 13, and is composed of movements arranged based on what was thought to be Vivaldi's work in France at the time, along with movements by Shedeville himself. Although the material is Italian, it is a unique work that strongly reflects French rococo taste. Marais' work was originally for violin, viola da gamba, and harpsichord, but the violin part can almost be played on a traverso, and here it is played on a recorder in the same register as the traverso.The entire disc is like a beautiful painting or tapestry.
