The Lucerne Festival Orchestra was founded in 1938 under the direction of the great conductor Toscanini by a group of renowned musicians. Since 2003, the orchestra has been conducted by the late Claudio Abbado, and has become one of the finest orchestras of our time. In October 2017, the Lucerne Festival Orchestra made its first tour of Japan in 11 years, and its first since Schee's appointment, with great success. The concert was a great success. This video is a recording of the performance at the Lucerne Festival in August 2017, prior to the tour in Japan. Both performances feature works based on dramatic literature. First is Mendelssohn's "A Summer Night's Dream," which was composed based on Shakespeare's well-known play "A Summer Night's Dream." When Mendelssohn was 17 years old, he read Shakespeare's play and was inspired to write "Overture Op.21".In later years, he was ordered by the King of Prussia to compose "Incidental Music Op.61," which consists of 12 pieces. The performance is aesthetically pleasing, as is typical of Chailly, who was for many years the music director of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, with which Mendelssohn was closely associated. Next is Tchaikovsky's Manfred Symphony. This symphony has a motto-music style, based on the English poet Lord Byron's play "Manfred". Shai has recorded this symphony with the Concertgebouw Orchestra, and his fluid sound and rich singing are still present here. The performance is a rewarding one in which Chailly's personality is fully demonstrated. The Lucerne Festival Orchestra, with its star-studded lineup of players, is a joy to behold in the concert video.
