The Stamitz Quartet takes on Novák's string quartets for their 40th anniversary. The world's first complete recording! The Stamitz Quartet presents a wide-ranging repertoire from Baroque to contemporary. Formed in 1985, the ensemble has achieved international success over 40 years through concerts and studio recordings. They are also noted for their ambitious recording projects, including complete string quartet cycles by Felster (SU-4050), Gubaidulina (SU-4078), and Karel Kovadlovic (SU-4267). Spanning nearly 40 years, Novák's three string quartets range from the first, inspired by the rural landscapes and folk music of Moravia and Slovakia, to the third, suffused with an uneasy premonition of war. These works also reflect the evolution of Novák's compositional technique over time. The Second Quartet, positioned midway, represents a work where Novák reached his distinctive style, incorporating church modes, impressionism, polyphonic textures, and rich rhythms. The masterful Stamitz Quartet became the first ensemble to record Novák's complete quartets, producing a legendary recording that remains the envy of many young musicians. SUPRAPHON
