Description:

Daniel Matejka, Czech Republic's Promising Young Virtuoso, Plays Works for Violin and Piano by Suk, Martinů, and Fischler The highly anticipated second album from young virtuoso Daniel Matějka, who debuted at age 18 with a recording of Ysaÿe's Unaccompanied Violin Sonatas (SU-4313), features works by Suk, Martinů, and Fischer. He is joined by Jan Slumeister, who won third prize at the Van Cliburn International Junior Competition. This duo is a rising star, having won the chamber music category at the Prague Concertino Competition. Martinu's "Czech Rhapsody," written for Fritz Kreisler (1875-1962), then 70 years old, in America immediately after the end of World War II, is a brilliant work that can be considered a major challenge for any violinist. Martinu's Violin Sonata No. 1, written in 1929, is a product of his Paris period, evident in its jazz elements and the impressionistic melodies occasionally found in the piano part. Lubos Fiser (1935-1999) is a composer who has also received international awards, including the UNESCO Prize and the Italian Prize. The violin sonata "The Hands" was originally supposed to be titled "Crux," but it was completely unacceptable under communism. Ivan Bogner-Strauß, who premiered this sonata, said, "This piece can be interpreted as a gentle depiction of the Stations of the Cross during Easter, with a funeral procession (pizzicato) following moments of whipping, hatred, and anxiety, and finally a glorious resurrection with the sound of bells." A young virtuoso born in this century pays tribute to the music of the great predecessors of his homeland. SUPRAPHON
