[Orff's "Catturi Carmina" was completed in 1943 as a sequel to his famous "Carmina Burana" and this is the first stereo recording of the work and the first in many years. Ormandy boasted a wide repertoire ranging from Bach to Walton's vocal music, but this is the only recording of "Catturi Carmina". This is the first stereo recording by an American orchestra, prior to Jochum's re-recordings (DG). The lyrics, incidentally, are erotic in nature, but Ormandy's masterful performance shows his great skill in putting together a large piece, and the love and hate of the people of medieval Germany are beautifully portrayed in an open sound filled with a generous and glorious sense of life.
