The band's lyrics, which were based on a social message based on racial and environmental issues, and their robust rock sound have earned them a huge following not only in their home country of Australia, but throughout the world, making them one of Australia's most popular national rock bands of the era. This is the band's sixth album, "Diesel & Dust" (1987), the biggest hit album in the band's history. The song "Beds Are Burning," a plea for the return of land taken from indigenous people, was a worldwide hit. The album was No. 1 in Australia for six consecutive weeks and reached No. 21 in the United States.The lyrics are full of social messages based on racial and environmental issues, and are expressed in the unique vocals and energetic rock of Peter Garrett, a huge, skinhead, and somewhat superhuman man.
