Description:
John Maus, the 21st century "philosophical musician" known for his collaborations with Animal Collective and Ariel Pink, releases his new album "Later Than You Think"! John Maus, the philosophical musician of the 21st century, has become a mythic figure over the past two decades, reborn through his radical integrity and faith. The intense emotion in his sound, his deep feeling and serious thinking, his arrangements that could work in a club or at a philosophy symposium, and his bizarre turns on pop music conventions have all generated a cult-like fervor. His new album, "Later Than You Think," released on the Young label, is the clearest embodiment of his beliefs and aesthetics yet. A symbol of musical independence, philosophical depth, and expressive extremes, his influences cross high culture and subcultures. Through his five albums to date, John Maus has made "music" a site of metaphysical and spiritual conflict, creating a world where irony, sadness, joy, and absurdity coexist. And with this album, he is full of faith, acceptance, and a passion to show the world his power. In between releasing the album, he wrote his doctoral dissertation on communication technology as a device of social control and built an analog synth fortress in his basement. All of this was the product of deep anguish. In "Later Than You Think," he sings: "I can't write anymore, so I shut myself away / Everybody says you're crazy. Songs such as "Came & Got," "Let Me Through," and "Reconstruct Your Life" abstractly depict Mouse's recent suffering and rebirth, and the tone of his voice shifts from earnestness to strength for reinvention. Throughout the album, recurring religious themes and symbols shape the mood of its emotion and aesthetics, and the preceding single, "I Hate Antichrist," has Mouse repeatedly chanting the title phrase, with drumming like a heartbeat, a snarling bass line, and a chant-like chant that rings in the upper registers over synths. The repeated words eventually take on the power of a mantra, leading the entire piece into a spiritual trance.
