Following Stravinsky’s *The Rite of Spring* and Tchaikovsky’s *Violin Concerto* with Kopachinskaya, Theodor Currentzis’s new release is a Blu-ray/DVD of Purcell’s opera *The Indian Queen*. This is a live recording of the performance at the Gran Teatre del Liceu, which caused a major sensation after being reimagined and directed by the visionary Peter Sellars. “The Queen of India,” which tells the tragic story of Queen Sempora—who had seized the throne of Mexico—until she took her own life, was written during Purcell’s final years but remained unfinished due to his untimely death. Fascinated by this work, Peter Sellers spent 25 years refining his concept and reworked the opera by adapting the story and characters from Nicaraguan author Rosario Aguilar’s novel *The Lost Chronicles of Terra Firma* into Purcell’s opera. In addition to the original music and libretto of “The Queen of India” (approximately 50 minutes), the production incorporates Purcell’s religious anthems and instrumental pieces into the musical score, and excerpts from Aguilar’s novel into the libretto. Aguilar’s novel depicts the 16th-century Spanish conquest of Central America through the perspectives of several women of that era; by overlaying this narrative onto the plot of Purcell’s opera, the work takes on a more multifaceted and contemporary significance. Furthermore, with set design by Chicago-based artist Gronk (whose work is also featured on the DVD/Blu-ray packaging) and choreography by Christopher Williams, the production has been reborn as a stimulating stage work with an entirely new narrative that seamlessly integrates music, theater, dance, literature, and visual art.
