Esperanza, a five-time Grammy Award-winning jazz bassist and singer, has collaborated with Brazilian music legend Milton Nascimento on this album. The album was produced by Esperanza and features guest appearances by Paul Simon, Dianne Reeves, Liane La Havas, Carolina Shorter, Shabaka Hutchings, Chin Bernardes, and Maria Gadu. Recorded in Brazil for the most part in 2023, this work is a dreamlike collaboration that expresses in music the friendship between Milton and Esperanza that began almost 15 years ago. Milton and Esperanza's iconic duets and exquisite musicianship bring listeners the theme of "the importance of the younger generation creating with their elders, learning from them, and building a new world. "Produced, produced, and arranged throughout 2023, Executive produced by Esperanza.While some of the work was done in the U.S., much of the recording took place in Rio de Janeiro. In addition to Esperanza's core band of Matthew Stevens (guitar), Justin Tyson and Eric Dube (drums), Leo Genovese (piano), and Corey D. King (vocals, synths), the group also included Orquestra Ouro Preto, percussionists Brazilian musicians such as Cainan do Jeje and Ronaldinho Silva and guitarists Lula Galvan and Ginga also participate. Milton + Esperanza is Esperanza's first new album since 2019's 12 Little Spells, which won a Grammy (for Best Jazz Vocal Album), and 2021's songwrights apothecary lab.A Grammy nominee a total of 11 times and a five-time winner, Esperanza has released eight full-length albums and has worked with her heroes, including Milton Nascimento and Wayne Shorter, as well as Q-Tip, Janelle Monae, Robert Glasper, and Teri Lynn Carrington, among others.
