The legendary May 15, 1953 release, one of the most important and celebrated releases in the jazz genre, is now available in a complete disc to celebrate the 70th anniversary of its recording! Five of the most influential musicians in jazz - Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Charles Mingus, Max Roach and Bud Powell - gathered at Toronto's Massey Hall to record their first and only recording as a quintet, "Jazz at Massey Hall. Jazz at Massey Hall," and although only a small audience actually experienced it, this historic evening was captured on tape. This definitive collection presents all of the recordings from that night by the members of this quintet, restored and remastered in 24-bit audio by Grammy Award-winning engineer Paul Blakemore on 2CD. Includes rare photos from this legendary night and two fascinating behind-the-scenes essays. The photographs are by David Scharf, whose father, Alan Scharf, was one of the concert organizers and one of the photographers who documented the event.The essay, written by live attendee Don Brown, provides a fascinating real-life account of the evening. The 19-track collection includes the quintet's original 12-inch debut vinyl LP version (with a bass overdub by Mingus), plus all six quintet tracks without the overdub, a performance by the Powell/Mingus/Loach trio, and a performance by Loach's " Drum Conversation" is included. The quintet consisted of five of the leading modern players of the day: Dizzy Gillespie (tp), Charlie Parker (as), Bud Powell (p), Charles Mingus (b), and Max Roach (ds). This was the only time the five musicians recorded together as a unit, and the last time Parker and Gillespie recorded together. Jazz at Massey Hall" was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1995, and was included in NPR's "Basic Jazz Library" and Penguin's "core collection" of essential jazz recordings.In some regions, it was released with the tagline "The greatest jazz concert of all time."
